The Sun and the Moon (Philippines)

Painting Sun, Moon Five Peaks

Once upon a time, long long ago, the Sun and the Moon got in a silly quarrel.

the Sun, bright, glowing and fiery said to the Moon “You are nothing without me! You are no good, your glow is only because of my light”

To which the moon replied as follows-

“You might be blazing hot, but I am more attractive that you could ever be. My serene glow bring all the women out at night- they spin and dance to my beauty!”

“This comment made the Sun very angry. In his rage the Sun threw a handful of dirt at the Moon’s face. This is why the Moon still has dark spots in her face”

This is a folktale from the Tinguian People. The Tinguian are a pagan Philippine people who inhabit chiefly the mountain province of Abra in northwestern Luzon.
