The Queen, Washerwoman, and the Blessing of Marriage (Rajasthan)

Once upon a time, there lived a king and a queen in a prosperous kingdom. They had four sons and one daughter. The king and queen were deeply religious and devoted their lives to worship, prayers, and good deeds. They raised their children with the same values, teaching them to respect elders, visit temples, and seek blessings from saints and priests.

As time passed, the four sons grew up and got married. One day, the entire royal family visited a temple to offer prayers. After the rituals were complete, everyone bowed before the priest and touched his feet to receive blessings. The priest blessed the sons and their wives, saying, “May you always remain happy and prosperous.”

However, when the princess approached him, the priest stepped back and remained silent.

The queen noticed this and became concerned. She respectfully asked the priest, “You blessed everyone, why did you not bless my daughter?”

The priest replied, “Because your daughter’s destiny is different. She has no marital fortune. The moment she gets married, her husband will die.”

Hearing this, the king and queen were devastated. They begged the priest for a solution.

The priest told them, “Beyond the seven seas lives a humble washerwoman. She possesses immense spiritual power gained through years of devotion and sacred fasting. Only her blessings can change your daughter’s fate.”

Determined to save their daughter, the queen secretly made her way to the washerwoman’s home. Every morning before dawn, she would travel there and quietly complete all the household chores—cleaning, cooking, and organizing—before anyone woke up.

The washerwoman lived in poverty with her sons and daughters-in-law, who often argued about household responsibilities. Gradually, however, peace returned to the house because all the work was mysteriously getting done.

Months passed.

One day, the washerwoman became suspicious and asked her daughters-in-law how the housework was being completed. They replied, “Mother, we don’t know. Every morning everything is already done.”

Curious, the washerwoman placed guards outside her home.

The next morning, the guards caught the queen while she was entering the house. The queen folded her hands and tearfully revealed the truth. She explained her daughter’s fate and begged for help. Moved by the queen’s devotion and selfless service, the washerwoman allowed her to continue.

Meanwhile, a suitable groom was found for the princess. When the wedding was arranged, the king and queen personally invited the washerwoman and requested her presence. At first she refused, but after repeated requests, she finally agreed. The royal family prepared luxurious accommodations for her, but she declined all comforts and asked only for a small room and simple food.

The wedding ceremonies began.

As the bride and groom took their sacred wedding rounds around the fire, strange things started happening. During the first round, the groom began coughing. During the second, his legs weakened. During the third, he collapsed lifelessly.

Panic spread throughout the palace.

The queen ran to the washerwoman in tears and said, “All these years I served you only for this day. Please save my daughter’s marriage.”

The washerwoman was initially upset because the queen had hidden the true reason for her service. But seeing the mother’s pain, she softened.

She took a vessel of sacred water in her hands and prayed:

“O Divine Mother, may all the merit, blessings, and spiritual power earned from every fast and prayer I have ever observed be transferred to this young man. May the bride’s marital happiness remain eternal.”

She sprinkled the holy water on the groom. Immediately, he came back to life.

The wedding was completed with great joy, and the entire kingdom celebrated. The king and queen were overwhelmed with gratitude.

When it was time for the washerwoman to leave, the royal family offered her immense wealth, gold, and precious gifts. But she refused everything.

“I need nothing,” she said. “Just give me two simple rotis and an earthen pot.”

She returned home carrying only those humble items.

On her way back, she stopped near a river to perform the final ritual of her sacred fast. As part of the ceremony, she had to donate 108 items. She broke the earthen pot into 108 pieces and offered them as charity to a passing priest.

The priest thought the pieces were worthless and threw them away into nearby bushes. But, a few pieces remained stuck inside his bag.

When he reached home, his wife emptied the bag and was astonished to find that the pieces had transformed into gold and precious jewels.

Realizing their value, the priest rushed back to collect the rest, but by then the remaining pieces were still ordinary clay. The miracle had already passed.

Meanwhile, the washerwoman reached home and asked her family whether everything had been fine in her absence. They replied, “Nothing happened, Mother. Your husband has simply been sleeping the entire time.”

At once, she understood. By giving all the spiritual merit of her lifelong fasts to the princess’s husband, she had unknowingly sacrificed her own husband’s life.

Without hesitation, she took another vessel of water and prayed:

“O Divine Mother, whatever merit remains from my final fast, may it be granted to my husband. Restore his life.”

She sprinkled the water upon him, and he immediately came back to life.

This story teaches that sincere devotion, selfless service, faith, and dedication carry immense spiritual power. The blessings earned through genuine prayer and sacrifice can overcome even the most difficult destiny. It reminds us that when a vow or prayer is observed with complete faith, purity of heart, and unwavering devotion, its blessings become truly powerful.
